‍Two methods are available for deploying and installing EFL’s and OFL’s with three or more legs / tails / ends. Which method to use depends on the length each leg.
‍
A basket that includes two or more compartments for arranging the legs is used in the cases where each leg is long enough for the ROV to connect each of them to the subsea structure while the other ends and connectors remains secured and parked in the basket parking receptacles.

In the cases where the legs are too short for each end to be pulled out and connected individually while the other ends and connectors are still located in the basket parking receptacles, one or two FLP Boxes are used.

Each FLP Box, Flying Lead Parking / Positioning Box, permit up to four legs / tails including connectors to be parked in it. The ROV retrieve the box from the basket and bring the box including flying lead legs over to the subsea location where one and one connector is then connected. It can be landed on hard or soft seabed, or on top of subsea structures.

The box can also be used as a local subsea parking structure for FL’s connectors during intervention or workover operations.

Retrieval and pull-out of a FLP Box with two parked flying lead legs from a Ubas A Basket is shown in this Video link.

Based on the use of reconfigured Ubas G, H or I ROV baskets. The basket arrangement includes two Flying Lead Parking / Positioning Boxes, FLP Boxes. Basket type depend on bundle length and diameter. Using the Ubas H basket, the bundle length may be several hundred meter long.

The FL bundle arrangement is similar to an HFL which contains several hydraulic lines / hoses.

An EFL / OFL bundle contains two, three or four EFL’s and/or OFL’s that are bundled together with one or two layers of spiral guard. Each flying lead cable may also be provided with spiral guard.  A stainless steel tension relief wire may also be included. A PEHD clamp assembly is included in each end of the bundle. The outer spiral guard(s) is located between these two clamp assemblies.

The bundle arrangement requires only one first end and one second end pull-out and connection operation. Furthermore, there will be only one bundle line that may require final ROV seabed positioning, permanently or temporarily stabilisation (e.g., Ubag T-Types), and if applicable, rock dumping.

Each FLP box includes up to four electrical and/or optical connector parking receptacles. A ROV releasable lenght adjustable holdback arrangement between the FLP Box and the bundle itself ensures that pull-out loads are transferred into the bundle assembly including tension relief wire during the ROV pull-out from the basket, and not into individual FL cables or parked connectors. The FL tails between the bundle clamp and the FLP box will be hanging in a catenary shape.

With basket side extensions, the capacity is 150m for a 12cm diameter HFL and 2 x 150m for a 32mm diameter EFL / OFL.

Minimum bending radiuses accommodated are 0.9m (HFL) and 0.25m (EFL/OFL).

This will permit disconnected flying leads to be parked in the panels or stands (stands fits the Ubas G basket only).

The stands and panels include supplier specific or generic type electrical/optical parking receptacles and Cobra Head / MQC parking receptacles. The stands / panels also include a ROV grabber, cobra head / MQC lock-unlock function, and position indication. Any client supplied equipment / MQC plates will be mounted onto panels or stands using bolt-on interface plates.

In case of a longer subsea operation period the MQC parking receptacles needs to be supplier specific and include blind couplers. Also, in case of a longer subsea operation period, the basket will be provided with a bolt on cathodic protection system (with verified electrical continuity).

The baskets will be provided with Ubag counterweights to balance stands and panels as applicable for such an operation.

It permits the MQC to be made up manually. It is also provided with a 3/4” square socket interface for final manual torque tool make-up of the MQC.

The tool is available together with ROV basket and MQC panels or stands. When hired it is delivered chained to the panel or stands.

For HFL installation large ball fists (100mm dia.) with anti-slip strap are recommended.

For EFL / OFL installation small ball fists (65mm dia.) with are recommended.

The fists are fast to install and do not require extensive duct taping and / or tie wraps for the attachments.

Fist used for flying lead installation is delivered with a temporary shortening ring to reduce the risk for entanglement between fists, or fist and jumper / cable during pull out of the flying lead.

For increased fist buoyancy and for easy grabbing of the fists they can as an option be delivered with a bendable and buoyant 1” PE tube.

EFL/OFL rental baskets are provided with parking receptacles for the electrical and optical connectors. These are permanently attached to the baskets and secure  and protect the connector during basket transport, handling, deployment, and landing on the seabed.    

In a case where a protector is needed on the connector during pull out of the EFL/OFL from the basket, and later for temporary placement on the seabed or on the subsea structure, a combined connector receptacle and protector is available. When the ROV retrieve the connector from the parking receptacle in the basket, part of the receptacle remains attached to the connector and act as a protector (mechanical + debris). The non-buoyant protector is removed by the ROV prior to connecting the connector. The protector does not include any metallic parts that may cause a possible galvanic reaction with the connector parts if the connector including protector is left temporarily unconnected on the seabed or subsea structure.
